Aggie Weekly- April 9th

Good Afternoon Students, Parents, and Community Members:

This week we started our first week of our Distance Learning Plan (DLP). We hosted a call on Monday with students, parents, and staff to discuss our DLP, senior events like graduation and prom, April vacation, and more. Please see below for the minutes from the Parent/Student meeting on Monday. In addition, we added expectations for students and parents to help with the success of the DLP.

Parent/Student DRAFT Distance Learning Plan (DLP): The creation and adoption of the Bristol Aggie Distance Learning Plan truly symbolizes the old adage that it takes a village to raise a child. Now more than ever, we are asking for your assistance to help educate our students and your children to ensure they continue to grow in a safe and healthy environment. We created some basic expectations for students and provided some guidance on how parents can assist with our Distance Learning Plan. Please click here for the full DLP.

Parent/Student Expectations
Students will:

  1. Check their school emails daily
  2. Check their Google Classroom and PowerSchool regularly to ensure their assignments are completed
  3. Make every effort to complete assignments within the time allotted.
  4. If a student has an issue (is sick, has an emergency, technical challenges), the student will communicate directly with their teacher in a timely manner.
Parents:
We ask that parents/guardians assist with the Distance Learning Plan expectations above. We understand that as a family you may have additional daily challenges, and we ask that you keep the lines of communication open between you, teachers, guidance, and administration to ensure the success of your child. We ask for your support in the following areas:
  1. Assist your child with the organization of their new schedule (see Student Distance Learning Organizer)
  2. Ensure that assignments are completed within the time allotted. If there is an emergency, please encourage your child to contact the teacher directly.
  3. If you child cannot meet the Distance Learning Plan expectations (is sick, has an emergency, technical challenges), please contact the following:
    1. Main Office Secretary Mrs. Welshman (DWelshman@bcahs.com)
    2. Guidance Counselor Ms. Costa (Grades 10 & 12) (KCosta@bcahs.com)
    3. Guidance Counselor Ms. Eddlem (Grades 9 & 11) (MEddlem@bcahs.com)
    4. Assistant Principal Mr. Higgins (BHiggins@bcahs.com)
It’s National Assistant Principals Week -There are plenty of ways (and days) to get involved.

This global pandemic has highlighted even more brightly the importance of effective school leadership—especially from assistant principals, who must now move seamlessly from distributing meals to monitoring online learning. Today through April 10, NASSP, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and the American Federation of School Administrators are recognizing the contributions of assistant principals to the success of students across America both during this crisis and year-round—and we invite you to join us.

A simple “thank you” goes a long way, but we can help you go even further. Visit www.nassp.org/apweek to get involved in the week’s virtual activities.

Send an E-Card

One thoughtful yet easy way to participate: Send an e-card! You can send a virtual thank-you anytime, anywhere. Browse the selection of ready-made cards, add your personalized message, and schedule delivery. This year’s variety has options designed for students, fellow assistant principals, principals, and anyone else to show their appreciation.

From the Nurse’s Office:

Handwashing is important to protecting yourself and others from germs that can cause severe illness, especially respiratory infections like coronavirus (or COVID-19). Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds at key times during the day to stay healthy and prevent spreading germs to others.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, you should also clean hands:
  • After you have been in a public place and touched an item or surface that may be frequently touched by other people, such as door handles, tables, gas pumps, shopping carts, or electronic cashier registers/screens.
  • Before touching your eyes, nose, or mouth because that’s how germs enter our bodies.

Concerned About Youth Vaping at Home while Schools are Closed?
During these extraordinary times, when our lives are disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak, schools, organizations, and activities are closed. While parents work to establish new routines at home and help their teens adapt, they may also be thinking about how to help their teens quit vaping or smoking. Youth are spending more time in the house and maybe more stressed than usual. Parents may especially want to encourage quitting because of evidence coming out that vaping, like smoking, harms the ability of the lungs to fight infection.

Quitting vaping or any tobacco product can be hard since these products contain nicotine, an extremely addictive substance. But, with support and by using proven quit strategies, teens can become nicotine-and tobacco-free.

There are two free programs to help Massachusetts youth become nicotine-and tobacco-free, This is Quitting powered by truth® and My Life, My Quit™.
  1. This is Quitting powered by truth® is a free and confidential texting program for young people who vape. Text “VapeFreeMass” to 88709.
  2. My Life, My Quit TM has youth coach specialists trained to help young people by phone or text. Young people can call or text "Start My Quit" to 855-891-9989 for free and confidential help or sign up online at mylifemyquit.com.
Youth can also visit teen.smokefree.gov for tips about quitting vaping and smoking; they can find additional information designed for them at mass.gov/vaping.

More information for parents and caregivers is available at GetOutraged.org or by contacting me at mvital@sevenhills.org.

The Southeast Tobacco-Free Community Partnership supports communities’ efforts to lower smoking prevalence and exposure to secondhand smoke; enhance state and local tobacco control efforts by exposing tobacco industry tactics, mobilizing the community to support and adopt evidence-based policies, and changing social norms. Funded by the Massachusetts Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Program, Community Partnerships serve as a resource for local coalitions, health and human service agencies, municipalities, and workplaces on tobacco intervention efforts.

This week we worked with our staff to develop our DRAFT Bristol County Agricultural High School Distance Learning Plan (DLP): Bristol County Agricultural High School recognizes that there is a strong need to provide educational opportunities for students during this national health crisis. The staff at Bristol Aggie will work to develop curricula through distance learning to increase engagement, enrich skills, and further increase student subject matter knowledge. As Commissioner Riley has stated, distance learning is not synonymous with online learning. Distance learning can take many forms, particularly project based learning. Light One Candle #Candles4SBRHS: On Tuesday, the following message was sent to the BA Community:

Greetings Bristol Aggie Community,

I hope you and your family are well. We wanted to share tragic news within Bristol County, specifically the Somerset-Berkley School District. In the past two weeks, Somerset-Berkley Regional High School has lost one current student and two very recent graduates of the Class of 2019. As you'd imagine, individually, those tragedies would be difficult to grieve as a school community, let alone given the back-to-back events, and especially the inability to gather as a community to support one another right now.

We are looking to support these families in our Bristol County community. Since they cannot gather as a community, families in Somerset and Berkley are lighting candles in their windows to demonstrate support for these grieving families. If you would like to show your support for these families, you can create messages, maybe even including the candle (real, drawn, whatever) to share with them via social media. Those interested can share messages, photos, videos etc through this GoogleDoc. If you post to social media, we encourage you to use #Candles4SBRHS to help unify the effort. We just thought with the importance of being together during an unimaginable time like this and given the inability to do so which social distancing prevents, it might help to know that others stand with them. I will be collecting the images on this Google Doc to send to the school principal so she can pass it along to her community. Any support is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Braga (KBraga@bcahs.com). Thank you

We encourage families to use common sense and abide by fire regulations.  We do not recommend using open flame in your window. We encourage battery operated devices to ensure your family's safety.  Even a sign in the window is very much appreciated.

Bristol Aggie caring for classroom turtles from across the state during school closures: Click here for the full story in the Taunton Daily Gazette

DIGHTON — Massachusetts schools have been closed for weeks because of the COVID-19 pandemic and closures are expected to last for several more. Coincidentally and unexpectedly, this also left some teachers with Plymouth Red-bellied Cooters, a turtle native to the area, in classrooms across the state in a very difficult situation.

Dr. Mike Jones, Massachusetts state herpetologist, contacted the Bristol County Agricultural High School Natural Resource Management Department to help with this unusual situation.

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (Mass Wildlife) began head-starting hatchling cooters in 1984 when the entire population was estimated to be only a few dozen animals in a half a dozen ponds. Head-starting is the process of raising young animals in captivity until they have passed their most vulnerable stage. Zoos, aquaria and natural history museums partnered with Mass Wildlife to help raise the endangered hatchling turtles. Mass Wildlife also recruited teachers and students from around Massachusetts to help and take an active role in protecting our rare turtles. Now, with classrooms empty, the turtles find themselves in need of a home.

“Of course we will help! Give me 48 hours to get ready”, Brian Bastarache, NRM department chair. The NRM department is well versed in caring for these turtles. Over the past nine years the department has raised 258 Plymouth Red-bellied Cooter head-starts for Mass Wildlife. The NRM faculty has been deemed essential school personnel as they now must provide the specialized care for all of the wildlife currently held at the Bristol Aggie campus. Bastarache and Kourtnie Bouley, NRM instructor, quickly set-up a third 500-gallon, recirculating aquaculture system to accommodate the cooters from the empty classrooms.

Throughout this week, Jones and teachers will bring their cooters to Bristol Aggie’s NRM Conservation Aquaculture Lab. The first arrivals were from Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School and Hingham Middle School. With the additional cooters from across the state, the Bristol Aggie cooter populations will reach nearly 100 animals. The Taunton Hannaford Supermarket generously provides the bags of greens needed to feed these herbivorous reptiles. Bristol Aggie’s conservation aquaculture laboratory is a unique facility designed to accommodate large numbers of turtles and other aquatic wildlife. Each year Bristol Aggie takes-in the remaining hatchling cooters that Mass Wildlife still has after all of the participating schools and other cooperating partners have received their animals. This year 54 cooters have been living and growing in the Bristol Aggie facility.

Bristol Aggie’s NRM department is no stranger to working with external agencies having partnerships with several environmental agencies, both state and federal, on a variety of wildlife conservation projects. Typically, the NRM students conduct all of the necessary work to maintain the animals involved in our projects. However, like all schools in the state, the students are not allowed on campus at this time. Robin VanRotz, director of Community Partnerships, was glad that the school could be a resource for the agencies.

“Our school has been a partner in this project for some time now and we are fortunate to have the resources to foster the turtles for the time being. The agriculture and environmental community always comes together, especially in unprecedented times like these,” VanRotz said.

The fostered turtles will be cared for in the Aggie school’s lab until they can return to their classrooms or be released once the warm weather returns.

Aggie Weekly-March 27th

Good Afternoon Students, Parents, and Community Members:
Each week we want to provide you with an update on how we are responding to the current COVID 19 crisis. Without students crowding the hallways, the Aggie Weekly was on pause, but it does not have too, so we need your help! We are requesting students to share (kbraga@bcahs.com) some of the work they are doing at home. If you are working on an assignment and you want to share your work, please send it along to me so we can keep up the Aggie Weekly classroom updates. Additionally, if you are working on your baseball/softball/LAX swing/skills in your backyard, please share those as well. Feel free to tweet @BristolAggie if you use Twitter. Check out Mrs. Noel’s attempt to engage her freshman exploratory students while playing the ukulele.

Gov. Baker extends school closures in Massachusetts through the end of April: Gov. Charlie Baker has issued an executive order that will further extend the closure of Massachusetts schools and nonemergency child care centers through the end of April amid the coronavirus outbreak in the state. On March 16, Baker ordered all schools to be closed for three weeks, from March 17 until April 6.

"This will allow school districts to provide the best possible opportunities for remote learning to all students," Baker said. "This is not an extended school vacation. During this long-term closure, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will work with school districts to further develop educational programming students can use at home. This way, schools can prepare for their students' return in May."

"We recognize this is a traumatic time for our kids," said Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley. "We want to get them settled, and then we want to get them into a routine." Click here for the full story.

Bristol Aggie Stepping Up by Donating Supplies and 3D Printing: Click here for the full story in the Taunton Gazette

DIGHTON - Bristol County Agricultural High School is hoping to help with the shortage of medical supplies in the area hospitals. While school is closed until May 4, the staff are still hard at work, but not in the way that you would expect. In addition to the donation of desperately needed masks and gloves, staff at Bristol Aggie will be 3-D printing face shields to help address the shortage of supplies for medical professionals on the front line.

Mark Lyons, Senior Education Strategist at AET Labs, was contacted by Medictronics, a global medical device company, to see if AET’s customers could help with creating the shields. Lyons reached out to the schools he has worked with to see if there was interest.

Adele Sands, Superintendent at Bristol County Agricultural High School, responded right away: “Of course we want to help. It is exciting to be able to have an impact and we know that every little bit helps in a situation like this. ”

The printing starts with a digital file that was provided by Medtronic. It takes approximately three hours to print two visors. Once the visor is complete, a plastic shield and elastic will be added. The face shield is another layer of protection that covers the medical professional’s face while still being able to wear a mask underneath.

Bristol Aggie is not the only school that jumped at the opportunity to help. The network of education professionals has come together to help where they can. Agricultural/vocational schools across the commonwealth have stepped up to the plate, offering donations of medical supplies and 3-D printing essential parts.

Custodian Dave Rhines and Security Carol Carr

Additionally, on Tuesday and Wednesday, Custodians Andy Silkworth and Joe Gaspar, along with Assistant Principal Mr. Higgins (not pictured) set up the new Stratasys 3D Printer. Mr. Higgins returned on Thursday and met with Mark Lyons from AET Labs. They started to print the face shields that will be assembled and then donated to local healthcare workers to help with the shortage.

Foreman Step Up: With no students on campus, the maintenance team has really stepped up to handle the workload. As you can see below, Carpenter Foreman, Mr. O’Connell is working the horses and preparing meals for small animals. We appreciate our Bristol Aggie Team stepping up to help with the extra workload.

Student Services: On Tuesday, Student Services sent out the following information to students and parents.

Dear Bristol Aggie Families,

Student Services wanted to reach out to you and let you know we are hard at work creating resources for health, wellness, and balance while we are out of school. For now, a few tips:
  • Keep to a routine. Especially try to keep to a regular school/work sleep schedule. Take a shower every day. Get dressed every day. Develop and follow a realistic schedule.
  • Keep in contact with outside providers and keep appointments for mental health. If you aren't able to go to their office, ask if they are offering other options to connect.
  • Be mindful of media intake. Temporarily limit exposure to sources that increase anxiety, depression, loneliness, fear, and anger. Choose content that helps you feel hopeful, happy, calm, connected, inspired and uplifted.
  • Take the time to get caught up. If you're behind, chip away at some outstanding assignments. It will help you keep from getting bored, can serve as a distraction, and will reduce long term stress. If you have a question about make-up work, let us know.
  • Stay connected. Genuinely connected. Have real phone conversations, write letters/cards, play board games with others, spend time near other humans (and animals) while keeping in mind social distancing protocols and reach out to friends and loved ones via facetime or other video platforms that feature more authentic 1-1 connection.
Even though we are not in school, we are still here to support you. We can be reached by email and we will get back to your questions as best we can. Please know there are many unanswered questions on how we can deliver our typical services in this uncertain time. Like in your classrooms, we ask that you try to be flexible and patient.

We understand the importance of our families emotional and physical well-being and have gathered resources you may find helpful. Please view them on the Student Services COVID Website.

Sincerely,

The Student Services Team

Ms. Costa, Ms. Eddlem, and Ms. Boudreau

MCAS: The Department is exploring all options around this year’s testing requirements. To date, DESE has postponed both the grade 10 English language arts assessment scheduled to begin on March 24. The Department will keep districts informed of decisions related to the spring 2020 assessment schedule and the competency determination. There may be an opportunity for a one-year assessment and accountability waiver from the federal government, but even if that is granted, we would need legislative relief from our state legislature to waive the state law around the testing requirement.

Distance Learning Opportunities (#StayEngaged):

Public media outlets WGBH in Boston and WGBY/New England Public Media in Springfield announced a new partnership Thursday with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to provide distance learning opportunities on their TV channels while schools are closed. "The core mission of public broadcasting always has been to support students in every community with the educational resources they need to thrive. That mission is even more important in challenging times," WGBH President and CEO Jon Abbott said in a statement. As you can see, walls are being framed. #BAPride #BAFuture
