Aggie Weekly-January 26th

Aggie Weekly
Good Afternoon Students, Parents, and Community Members:
This week we concluded term 2, and report cards will be sent home next Thursday via email.  If students still need to make up work, please make arrangements with your teachers before Wednesday, January 31st.  Continue your hard work and keep up the good work!

Next Phase for Seniors:  We are proud to share with you our seniors’ plans for their next steps in college and career exploration.  Based on the knowledge and skills,  learned during their 4 years at BA, we are excited to  publish acceptances into colleges, universities, military plans, and any career pathways cach week.  Please let Ms. Dias know in Student Services, so we can update our list weekly.  Thank you for your dedication to excellence and drive to maintain Bristol Aggie Excellence.

School Building Committee: On Tuesday, the School Building Committee met to finalize the new updated plans for the Bristol Aggie Renovation project.  The key updates include:
  • Cafeteria and Media Center are located in a separate building (remains on North Side of campus)
  • Arbor Bucket Truck Barn is located in a separate facility (no longer attached to Flori).

In the Classroom:
  • Arbor: On Tuesday at the Board of Trustees meeting, three arbor students provided a presentation to the Board of Trustees regarding their program.  Nice work!

  • Flori: This week our Flori students began preparations for the FFA State Convention which is coming up soon.

  • Flori: Junior and Senior students are working in small groups, in Flori, to create a table design based on an article they researched in National Geographic. The students will be assessed on their design skills using scale, proportion and visual balance and also a 10 minute verbal presentation on their topic.

BCAHS Arbor Quarterly ISA Update:
The Arboriculture department is busy as bees and firing on all cylinders. After finishing chainsaw safety, the freshmen are about to begin term three which focuses on tree pruning. The sophomores are deep into both tree ID and tree biology. The junior class is now wrapping up hazard tree evaluation and mitigation. They are in the midst of tree ID as well. The senior class is in the middle of the CDL class and tree ID. Davey Tree graciously sends some CDL trucks and amazing employees to assist in learning how to properly preform a pre-trip inspection on a CDL vehicle.
Arbor Events:
  • After the firewood sale this fall the department was able to assist our students in purchasing arborwear sweatshirts and having them embroidered. The students are always excited to get their new “swag”.
  • The school hosts a Bonfire and Ice celebration every year. The senior class gathers material and constructs the bonfire as part of the equipment operation class.
  • The Board of Trustees (school committee) recently asked our major to present our department to them and give them an update as to the latest. One student from each class was selected. They prepared a powerpoint and presented it to the board. This was a great opportunity for our students to go through the process of how to prepare for and follow through with a presentation to the “powers that be”. Samantha Wheaton, John Ferry, and Corey Gagney absolutely killed it! We received multiple comments about the quality of their presentation. We couldn’t be more proud. Well done!
Our students, are always searching for more sources of information to help expand our educational and social horizons. If you are at all interested in joining the Arbor Advisory Board or becoming an educational resource, contact Seth Cook at scook@bcahs.com

Job Fair open to High School Students
You’re students are invited!  We are hosting the 3rd annual Green Industry Job Fair in February.  I invite you to take advantage of this program to learn more about the opportunities in the green industry; provide an opportunity for your students to get a jump on seasonal and/or full time work in the green industry; and meet with industry leaders one on one.  In the past, high school students have found a great value in attending – I am actually bringing my eighth grade daughter to talk to someone about a future in Landscape Architecture!
If you have students that have mathematical and analytical skills, creativity, environmental awareness, technology savvy, love for the outdoors and a desire to work with their hands – a career in horticulture might be the perfect fit.  We need your help to educate them and help them explore the opportunities available.
We would be so appreciative if you could please forward this invite to any staff or students that might be interested.
Massachusetts Nursery & Landscape Assn.’s 3rd Annual Career Fair
  • Where: Sturbridge Host Hotel & Conference Center, Sturbridge, MA
  • When: Tuesday, February 27, 2018 ~ 1 – 5 pm & Wednesday, February 28, 2018 ~ 8 am to 12:00 PM
  • Cost: It’s FREE but pre-registration will be required: www.mnla.com/job-fair-2018

To learn more about taking a group of high school students: http://c.ymcdn.com/sites/www.mnla.com/resource/resmgr/docs/MNLA-WF18-StudentReg(11-28-1.pdf
Who should attend: anyone looking for a career in Environmental Horticulture! The MNLA Green Industry Career Fair is where landscape, nursery and greenhouse companies will connect with individuals looking for jobs in the green industry.
Who will job seekers meet at the Career Fair?  Landscape, nursery and greenhouse companies will be on hand to talk with job seekers about a wide variety of jobs. The industry needs irrigation technicians, project managers, foremen, salespeople, managers and supervisors, horticulturists and licensed applicators, landscape designers, equipment and fleet mechanics, people with CAD experience and laborers. Green industry companies have offices and need support staff on their teams, too.  Any questions contact Jessica Wozniak, Project Coordinator, MNLA 508-410-3903

FFA - Backpacks for Bases: The 2018 Backpacks for Bases community service project was kicked off during Winter Leadership Camp last weekend. Through this project, MA FFA will distribute 300 backpacks filled with school supplies to military families in Massachusetts.  We need your help!
MA FFA received a Living to Serve Grant from National FFA. We will be utilizing the funds to purchase 150 backpacks and supplies to fill them.  We are asking our chapters to collectively match that number so we will have a total of 300 backpacks to distribute. You can solicit donations of supplies, money to purchase them, or a combination thereof. I have attached a flyer that outlines the program, and includes a list of materials we are aiming to collect.

What does this mean for you? An average of 10 bags per chapter will help us reach our goal. Of course, any amount over or under 10 is appreciated as well. You can do as few, or as many, as you would like.  300 backpacks is the state goal. Feel free to help us blow that number out of the park.

The project will culminate during pre-conference at the state convention in March.  All chapters are asked to bring their donations to pre-conference, where they will be assembled by the students in attendance.  For those chapters not attending pre-conference, arrangements can be made to pick up your donations prior to the convention.

In order to adequately plan for pick up and distribution of the filled backpacks, I am asking each chapter to complete the brief survey below. At this time, the only information needed is how many backpacks and supplies you will commit to.  Don't worry if your final number changes.  You can update it as convention draws near.
Shopping Alert:
If you need to purchase backpacks, here is the link to the one MA FFA will be using.  The current price is $15.97 each. Amazon is running a special if you purchase 7 packs, you will receive 3 free.  There are also free promotions for lesser quantities as well.  The promotion does not have an end date listed as of today. Please feel free to use a different pack, or solicit donations of them as well.  I just wanted to pass on a good deal.
