Activities and Athletics:
Bristol-Aggie holds on to beat Cape Cod Academy (Steven Sanchez, Taunton Gazette Sports Editor)
DIGHTON — Tiffany Cabral and Kennedy Alves were barely walking the last time the Bristol-Aggie girls basketball team posted a playoff victory. It all ended for the Chieftains on Tuesday night against 17th-seeded Cape Cod Academy. “We played really tight defense tonight and we did well on the offensive side,” Cabral said. Bristol-Aggie won their first tournament game since 2001 after holding on to beat the Seahawks, 50-40, in a Division IV South preliminary game at Bristol County Agricultural High School.
With the victory, the Chieftains (11-10) will travel to No. 1 seed West Bridgewater on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
“This was a really big game for us,” Alves said. “We’ve been talking about this game for the past couple of days. Our nerves were there in the beginning of the game, but then we got our heads back into the game. I’m so proud of the girls [tonight] and how the season has gone for us.”
Cabral led all scorers for Bristol-Aggie with a game-high 27 points. She also knocked down a pair of three-pointers and had five steals in the victory. Alves contributed nine points and Hannah Borges chipped in with eight points.
Kaleigh Bickford, Sarah Dumaresq and Marena Gardella each scored 10 points for CCA.
“We had a really good start and did a lot of things well as a team,” Chieftain head coach Mike Johnson said. “As goes Tiffany [Cabral], so goes the team. She has been doing that all season for us. The offense runs through her and she works hard. She puts in extra practice time and it shows on the court.”
BA jumped out of the gate quickly in the first quarter.
Led by Cabral, Alves and Borges, the Chieftains took an 11-1 lead. The Seahawks netted their first baskets of the game — Lindsay Schoener (six) and Gardella — with under two minutes left, but they still trailed after one quarter, 13-7.
Alves’ six points in the second quarter enabled BA to go into the locker room with a 23-14 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, it was all Cabral. The junior point guard poured in 13 points as the Chieftains upped their margin to 41-23 at the end of the third.
With its season on the line, CCA fought back in the fourth quarter against BA to slice a 19-point advantage to an eight-point deficit with under three minutes to play. But Cabral sank two of four free throws to ice the contest for the Chieftains.
“It was really big that our defense played well at the end,” Cabral said. “It helped us keep our lead.”
Malarie Pittsley (eight rebounds), Reilly Cusick and Savannah Salvador each played for BA.
Now it’s on to the next game.
“This is all about the girls,” Johnson said. “They worked hard today. We’ll practice tomorrow and get ready for West Bridgewater.”
Bristol Aggie’s Kennedy Alves, left, goes up for two points as Cape Cod Academy’s Lindsay Schoener defends during Tuesday’s Division IV South preliminary game at Bristol County Agricultural High School in Dighton.
