Aggie Weekly-October 11th

Good Afternoon Students, Parents, and Community Members:

This week our students continued to work on Fall Show projects. See below some pictures of their progress. Just a reminder that Monday is no school due to the Columbus holiday and Friday there is no official school because of the start of Fall Show. Fall Show is Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00-5:00 pm. Last year we had nearly 5,000 guests attend. We look forward to seeing you here!

Attention BA Community:

On September 24th, Governor Baker declared a public health emergency in response to the outbreak of severe lung disease associated with e-cigarettes and vaping products and the epidemic of e-cigarette use among youth. With the approval of Governor Baker, Commissioner Bharel of DPH issued an Order to pause all sales of e-cigarette and vaping products for four months. You can learn more at: www.mass.gov/vapingemergency.

This is an important time to promote Massachusetts quit vaping/tobacco resources and recognize nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

Youth Quit Vaping/Tobacco Resources

This is Quitting powered by truth® is a free and confidential texting program for young people who vape. Young people can text “VapeFreeMass” to 88709 to get started.

My Life, My Quit has youth coach specialists trained to help young people by phone or text. Young people can call or text "Start My Quit" to 855-891-9989 for free and confidential help or visit www.mylifemyquit.com to sign up online.

Visit www.teen.smokefree.gov for tools and tips.

Encourage young people to ask their school nurse or counselor, athletic coach, doctor, parent or other trusted adult for help.

For more information, young people can visit www.mass.gov/vaping, and parents/adults can visit www.GetOutraged.orgwww.GetOutraged.org

If your organization or group has a newsletter and you would like to publish a piece on youth quit resources, let me know-- I have a newsletter blurb copy ready to go that I can email you!

Adult Quit Vaping/Tobacco Resources

I can provide a free staff training on adult smoking cessation at your organization. In this training, staff will learn why addressing tobacco use is so important, and how to help the adults you serve on their journey to become tobacco-free.

Adults are three times as likely to quit for good with the combination of FDA approved quit smoking medication and counseling.

Adults can call the Massachusetts Smokers' Helpline 1-800-QUIT-NOW (7 days per week/24 hours per day, holiday hours may vary) to receive counseling online, by phone or through eChat and at least four weeks of free nicotine patches. www.makesmokinghistory.org/quit-now

Effective September 25, 2019, MassHealth has eliminated all co-payments for smoking cessation products, including nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

Standing order for Dispensing Nicotine Replacement Therapy Products

Commissioner Bharel issued an order expanding access to federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved, over the-counter nicotine replacement therapy products including gum, lozenges and patches, through a statewide Standing Order.

The Standing Order authorizes licensed pharmacists to dispense medically appropriate nicotine replacement therapy products to a person 18 years or older with proper identification who requires the products in connection with smoking cessation or vaping cessation.

There’s still much work to do locally. This vaping ban is temporary and does not address all tobacco products. We know that the tobacco and vaping industries have a history of targeting youth, people of color, and the LGBTQ community. While the pause in vape sales will help to temporarily protect our communities from vaping, we still have work to do to ensure that we protect our young people and our communities from tobacco and vaping industry tactics, not only now, but in the months and years to come. If you are considering supporting any tobacco policy changes in your community this year, let me know so I can help your community mobilize. You can learn more about tobacco regulations in your community at MakeSmokingHistory.org.

In the Classroom:
  • Animal Science: LG Animal Science students giving a tour to members of our community this afternoon. #BAPRIDE

From the Cafe: Today, the cafeteria received a 4 tier growing system. This system from EvanLEE Organics will allow the Food Services staff to have direct access to fresh greens (for salads, toppings, and smoothies) and herbs (for their famous pesto) throughout the year! #BAPRIDE #GrantFunded

From the BA Cafe: Bristol Aggie goes “Pink” for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The cafeteria staff will be wearing pink aprons all month to express our moral support for women and men with breast cancer.

Congratulations to Gabrielle Schwenk for guessing the right amount of marshmallows for our Hot Chocolate Milk Kick-off without going over. Her guess was 693. Actual count was 774. Gabrielle won 3 a la carte sizes of hot chocolate milk!

Please get Physicals up to date and bring a copy to the nurse.

National School Lunch Week.

To recognize the National School Lunch Program, Bristol Aggie will celebrate National School Lunch Week from October 14-18, 2019 by highlighting our own harvest of meats, eggs, fruits and vegetables as well as those from local farmers. Our lunches offer students fruits and vegetables, whole grains and milk, and meet federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium. National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the benefits of our lunch program and the appealing variety of local choices in the cafeteria we have daily.
