Aggie Weekly-February 18th

Good Afternoon Students, Parents, and Community Members:

Black History Month - All Month:

Common Sense Media for Parents and Families

These memorable movies feature everything from  Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? to the fierce call to action of Ava DuVernay's stirring documentary 13th. Kids and parents will find much to appreciate in these films that bring to life the experiences that have helped shape the entire United States -- from the Civil War to civil rights.

Great Movies with Black Characters

For more fantastic picks, check out their lists of Movies with Inspiring Black Girls and Women and TV Shows with Black Leads.

Additionally:  Take a look at the following Career Conversation Series resource.

Career Conversations with African American STEM Professionals

The National Museum of African American History and Culture invites middle school and high school students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through the Window and into the Mirror is a video conversation series about the experiences of African American STEM professionals today. Students will peer into the “windows” of the speakers’ lives, learn from their lived experiences as STEM professionals, and find parts of their own culture and lifestyle “mirrored” in the speakers’ lessons of their youth and greatest challenges and accomplishments.

Past speakers include Jessica Watkins, PhD, NASA astronaut; Imani Black, oyster farmer and aquaculturist; and Justin Shaifer, founder of Fascinate Inc., an organization that partners with corporations such as Microsoft and Google to excite underrepresented students about STEM careers. He is also a science education PhD student at Teachers College of Columbia University and host of the live science show Escape Lab featured on Twitch.

DESE Mask Mandate Update

Date: Thursday, February 10, 2022

Subject: Update on DESE Mask Requirement (memo from DESE-see below)

Good Afternoon Bristol Aggie Community,

As many of you are now aware, Department of Education Commissioner Riley notified the public yesterday in a news conference as well as published this media release

“After consulting with medical experts and state health officials, the Commissioner will not renew the state mask requirement after it expires on February 28, 2022. Effective Monday, February 28, the DESE mask requirement will be lifted statewide. The Commonwealth’s high vaccination rates and widespread availability of COVID-19 testing for school personnel and students support this decision.

Masking continues to be required on all school buses, per federal order.

DESE and DPH strongly recommend students and staff continue to follow the DESE-DPH Protocols for Responding to COVID-19 Scenarios.

As always, any individual who wishes to continue to mask, including those who face higher risk from COVID-19, should be supported in that choice. DESE and DPH strongly recommend unvaccinated individuals should continue to wear masks in school settings.

The Commissioner will continue to monitor public health data, consult with medical experts and state health officials, and issue further guidance and/or requirements as needed.

DESE continues to recommend that districts and schools adopt a layered approach to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in school settings. DESE and DPH continue to strongly urge all eligible individuals to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and booster and continue to support schools with vaccination clinics. Other mitigations include participating in the statewide COVID-19 testing program, maintaining good hand hygiene practices, and staying home when sick.”

Prior to any change in our mask policy, Bristol Aggie Board of Trustees will meet to discuss and vote on the new guidance. The next scheduled Board of Trustees meeting is on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at 7:00 pm.  Once a decision has been made, we will notify our school community.  Until then, all current protocols remain in place.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me (KBraga@bcahs.com).

Sincerely,

Kevin P. Braga

Assistant Superintendent/Principal
