NRM Wild Wednesdays
Every Wednesday morning since late January, the Natural Resources Management (NRM) juniors and seniors have delivered a Wild Wednesday program for Bristol Aggie students. This idea grew from the NRM seniors describing how lots of students swing by the natural history museum before school because they love the bullfrogs currently residing in our Freshwater Wetlands aquarium exhibit. Over the next few days they developed a program to deliver a short presentation about the American bullfrog, our target training efforts with our frogs, and bullfrog feeding demonstration. Fliers were created and posted around the campus.
At 7:45 each Wednesday morning the NRM students assembled to ready their props and themselves. At 7:55 on January 26th the first Wild Wednesday began. The enthusiastic and acrobatic feeding response of American bullfrogs rarely disappoints. Hopefully, the audience also learned a bit about amphibian biology as well. “Bullfrog Breakfast” ran for four weeks. Meanwhile, NRM juniors Emma and Mila were developing our second Wild Wednesday program and learning from their peers’ performance. On March 2nd “Drinking with Diamondbacks” premiered at 7:55 AM. This presentation highlighted the little know biology of how our only brackish water turtles acquire freshwater in a salty world. The feature of the presentation is the much more sedate guzzling of freshwater by two of our resident terrapins.
Feeding bullfrogs and watering terrapins are just two of the typical tasks the NRM students must do to maintain captive wildlife. Because of this student-generated presentations, these tasks and the biology behind them can be shared with our entire Bristol Aggie community. These also provide the NRM students with opportunities to engage in and practice public speaking, schedule, writing, teamwork, project/process planning, and punctuality (at 7:45 AM). These are all the “soft skills” that are vital to anyone’s professional success.
Sharon & Jake presenting “Bullfrog Breakfast.” Mila & Emma presenting “Drinking with Diamondbacks.”
You should be able to see these full presentations soon on the Bristol Aggie NRM YouTube Channel.
