2022-2023 School Calendar (NEXT YEAR)

In the Classroom:

On Monday May 23, 2022 for World Turtle Day, the Natural Resource Management Juniors set out to release 101 juvenile Blanding’s turtles they have been headstarting this year at Assabet National Wildlife Refuge with the U.S Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS). The turtles were received as hatchlings in September when school began, and the students were tasked with tricking the turtles into staying active and eating throughout their dormant season. Students monitored each individual's growth, including weight and shell length each week over the duration of eight months until they were released back into their natural habitat. The goal of heartstarting is to give a young animal time needed to develop without challenges presented in the wild to increase their chances of survival. Students suited up in waders to find thickly vegetated locations throughout the wetland to release the turtles. This is Bristol Aggie NRM 12th year raising Blanding’s turtles in collaboration with the USFWS resulting in the releasing of 1,101 Blanding's turtles to date.
