Together again: Bristol Aggie gathers for 1st assembly since COVID, celebrates food drive- Click here for the story in the Taunton Gazette
DIGHTON — There's a very good reason Bristol County Agricultural High School's recent holiday assembly in the school gymnasium was more like a boisterous pep rally.
It was the school's first in-person assembly since March of 2020 when the disruptions of the COVID pandemic began.
Plus, the students were gathered to celebrate a record-breaking collection of items for the annual food drive.
"It has been too long since we have been able to come together as a grade 9-12 community," Principal and Assistant Superintendent Kevin Braga said as the rows of students in the bleacher seats in front of him cheered at the start of the Nov. 24 event.
"Assembly is an opportunity for us to come together and bond as a community."
The students continued their loud and joyous response as Braga announced the results of this year's successful annual food drive, which for over 20 years has helped feed over 100 local families with food baskets each holiday season.
Every year, each curriculum major is given a specific goal to collect a specific food item for the baskets that will be delivered to families in need.
Braga announced that this year most majors exceeded their collection goals.
The winners of the food drive, the small animal major students, had a goal of 200 canned vegetables and ended up donating 838 cans.
The large animal major students collected 132 mashed potato boxes, exceeding their goal of 100 boxes.
Agricultural Mechanics majors collected 176 packets and boxes of gravy, far exceeding their collection goal of 50.
Landscaping's goal was 100 jars of cranberry sauce and they ended up donating 125.
The faculty and staff, Braga said, had set a goal of raising $400, but they were able to raise over $600 and donated nearly $2,000 in gift cards to local families in need.
The freshmen as a whole collected 72 boxes of pasta, 35 pieces of fruit and 32 jars of pasta sauce.
Braga then drew a strong parallel between this holiday giving and what being a product of Bristol County Agricultural High School is all about.
He said that in preparing for the assembly he had several conversations with students and staff about the "much anticipated reunification." Most striking to him was a staff member's poem entitled "The Aggie".
"For some, a school is just a building, a place built of stone and brick and mortar," Braga recited. "But we know that Bristol Aggie is so much more than that."
He concluded that attending Bristol Aggie should be more about the legacy its students leave behind. He gave as an example the story of two stone masons. One complained about his heavy, difficult and monotonous work. The second stone mason said, "I love my job. I'm building a castle."
"As you go through the daily grind, always stay focused on why or how you are shaping your legacy at Bristol Aggie and laying the foundation that will support you in the future," he said.
He said, "Our mission is to support our community, and holding food drives and toy drives are important to demonstrate that we can support families in need."
Bristol Aggie's annual toy drive is now accepting donations of new unwrapped toys through Dec. 18. Drop Off Locations: the front of Gilbert Hall, the rear of Standish House. Monetary donations are also being accepted.
NHS Induction Ceremony: On Tuesday night, the National Honors Society hosted their annual induction ceremony. Congratulations to all the students inducted and we look forward to your leadership.
PTO Bonfire: Decorating for the Bristol Aggie Bonfire. Looking forward to seeing everyone and bringing back another great event.

Dual Enrollment Opportunities
Bristol Community College will be hosting several Perkins funded courses for vocational technical students in the surrounding communities. In order to be eligible to take a course you must meet the following criteria:
Must meet all course prerequisites per the course policies of Bristol Community College
Have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.0 or show potential for academic success
Maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 at Bristol to continue in dual enrollment
Submit a completed Bristol Dual Enrollment Application and/or an Underage Request Form (only for students under 16) - this is provided by Ms. Costa or found linked
Taking a dual enrollment college course takes both personal responsibility and dedication as it is a college level course and will require time outside of your normal school day to complete required coursework. Each student interested should meet with their school counselor to determine if they meet the criteria and are on track to academically be successful within a college course alongside their Aggie workload.
The courses below are being offered for Spring 2022, are free (aside from book fees) and are on a first come first serve basis, so there is no guarantee of a spot. In addition, students must meet prerequisites of the course they wish to enroll in and may be required to also register for the CSS 101 course if this is the first time taking a dual enrollment course.
Activities and Athletics: Winter sports is BACK! Stay tuned for schedules
FFA
The State FFA Officers will be conducting two virtual leadership workshops next week, on December 9th. The first workshop will begin at 1:00PM. The second will begin at 1:45PM. Your students are welcome to attend either one, or both if they prefer. Full class login is welcomed, as are individual student work stations. Since this is a leadership training event, participants should be expected to have cameras on so as to interact with the full group.
For those who have students planning to apply for their Bay State Degree, the workshops will count towards one their required five events above the chapter level.
