Aggie Weekly-May 5th

Good Afternoon Students, Parents, and Community Members:

Teacher Appreciation Week: Monday kicks off Teacher Appreciation Week and we are fortunate to have such an amazing staff.  We have been working with the PTO to find ways to celebrate our staff.  Please join us in telling our teachers “THANK YOU.”

This week’s HIGH 5 CLUB Senior of the Week-SOPHIA CEDERHOLM

May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month,

We pay tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America's history and are instrumental in its future success.

What is it and when is it celebrated?

It is a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States and takes place in May to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants on May 7, 1843, as well as the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, which was built largely by Chinese immigrants. It started in 1978 as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week and was extended to a full month in 1990.

Why Is It Celebrated?

According to the Pew Research Center, there are 22 million Asian Americans living in the U.S.

AAPI Heritage Month is an opportunity for Asian Americans to take back the narrative and for allies to stand in solidarity with the AAPI community.

Inaugural Founders' Scholarships awarded to two incoming students-Scholarships cover high-achieving Massachusetts residents' tuition, fees, food, and housing for four years

Incoming UMass Dartmouth first-years Olivia DeSimone (Attleboro) and Kailey Sousa (Acushnet) were recently selected as the inaugural winners of the Founders' Scholarship, a new "full-ride" scholarship at UMassD that will cover full tuition and fees, as well as food and housing for four years for high-achieving Massachusetts residents.

"Receiving the Founders' Scholarship means everything to me! My family has instilled the value and importance of education in me, so I am truly grateful for the opportunity to continue my education at UMass Dartmouth," said DeSimone, who will major in health & society when she arrives at UMassD in the fall.

"Because of this scholarship, I will be able to pursue a graduate degree after college with far less of a financial burden. I'm incredibly proud of this accomplishment, as it affirms all of the hard work and dedication I have put into my schooling and extracurricular activities."

To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must be a Massachusetts resident with a cumulative 4.0 GPA, minimum 1200 SAT or 24 ACT (if submitting test scores), rank in the top 10 of their graduating class, and live on campus at UMassD. Over 160 admitted students applied for the awards.

"While the money allows me to follow my dreams and focus on everything else besides the financial aspect, the support and encouragement from the committee members I spoke to lets me know there is a support system on my side and a team of leaders that I will one day be a part of," said Sousa, who will study bioengineering in the fall. "I promise to make a difference and impact at UMassD."

In the Classroom:

Flori-Senior and junior Flori students were actively involved in creating flowers for the prom.

In preparation for the revamped Spring Expo this weekend, the Junior Nursery Operations class created a Japanese inspired garden complete with a small pond and bamboo water feature called Shishi-odoshi. The students used a mixture of tropical houseplants as well as trees, shrubs, and perennials that are found in our area.

Attention Class of 2023:

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians of the Class of 2023,

Graduation is rapidly approaching and we are making final preparations for this memorable event, which is set for Thursday, June 1st at 6:30 pm.  The event will take place on our baseball field.   If weather impacts an evening ceremony, then we will have a rain date on Friday, June 2nd. Graduates will be given 4 tickets. The tickets will give you access to the seating on the field.  If you have more than four guests, they will be able to stand/sit along the fence (see graphic below), and they can bring their own seat if they prefer.  We will provide the tickets at the mandatory graduation rehearsals on Tuesday, May 30th and Wednesday, May 31st at 8:30 am.  Please see the sketches below that layout graduation guidelines and click here for the parking plan.

To help prepare for graduation, we wanted to provide families with as much information regarding logistics as possible.  Students are NOT allowed to decorate their caps for graduation. Handicap and elderly seating will be available (limited quantity) on the field facing the graduates (please click here to complete the elderly/handicap seating accommodations request).  We will be providing transportation from the parking lot to the seating area on the field. Parents will be facing the graduates (overlooking the farm) on the field, and graduates will be facing home plate.

Graduation rehearsal is mandatory. If you do not participate in the graduation rehearsal you will not be able to walk at graduation.  We are using this date to help distribute 4 tickets (1 vehicle per family/graduate is highly recommended) to each graduate.   Students will be reporting to the high school at 5:00 pm to conduct a mini rehearsal on graduation day.

Parking is limited on the south side of the campus that cannot accommodate all guests, so we are encouraging that graduates and families use the same vehicle to come to the ceremony.  There will be handicap parking along the tree line at Gilbert Hall and the student parking lot has approximately 90 spaces (combined).   Additional parking will be at the hayfield.

Dear Bristol Aggie 12th Grade Families,

As a reminder, the Student Services team will be doing presentations for the SOS Signs of Suicide program on May 8th and 15th. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help. SOS has been used by thousands of schools over the past few decades, and studies have shown that it effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing the number of students’ self-reported suicide attempts. Through the program, students learn that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help, how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend, to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend, and who they can turn to at school for help, if they need it.

Following an age appropriate video, students will complete a google form that includes a brief depression screening tool and asks if they would like to talk to an adult about any concerns. We encourage you to visit  www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. In addition, here are links for an infographic for you to reinforce the ACT message at home and a list of community resources. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s participation in this program please contact me at the email or phone number listed below. In addition, if you would like to opt your student out of this presentation, please complete this google form by Sunday, May 7th.

Sincerely,

Beth Boudreau

Several students have helped clean up the bee yard and storage shed over the past couple weeks in preparation for the addition of new colonies.  Over the weekend we installed two nucs in the beeyard with the assistance of the Bristol County Beekeepers Association.

Currently, Bristol Aggie has four active beehives in need of care.  Anyone interested in learning more about honeybees or becoming a beekeeper, email Mr. Costa at ccosta@bcahs.com for more information.

We had the pleasure to welcome in the National Guard who brought in equipment to run their Guard Fit Fitness Program. It is an interactive fitness program that teaches students how to perform different fitness exercises, gives a competitive edge and helps students learn to pace themselves and push themselves within their group. We receive great feedback from both days!

Landscape CDE: On Thursday, our Landscape Design and Contracting students participated in the FFA Competition Hardscape CDE.  Keep up the great work!
