In 2023, Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, May 29. 

What’s the Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans Day? (From Old Farmer’s Almanac/Yankee Publishing)

On both Memorial Day and Veterans Day, it’s customary to spend time remembering and honoring the countless veterans who have served the United States throughout the country’s history. However, there is a distinction between the two holidays:

• Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. In other words, the purpose of Memorial Day is to memorialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
  You’ll find that some veterans find it dismaying when they are thanked on this day. It’s a time remembering those who lost their lives and could not come home. We might consider how we can support and safeguard their grieving families and loved ones who are left behind, as well as reflecting on why we—the living—have the luxury and freedom that we enjoy today.
   

• Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL who served in the United States Armed Forces—in wartime or peacetime—regardless of whether they died or survived. Some ways to honor this holiday:

Honor and Respect

Visit a local Veterans cemetery. Almost every community has some sort of a war memorial.

Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 PM 

Encouraging individual department and agency personnel, and Americans everywhere, to pause for one minute at 3:00 p.m. (local time) on Memorial Day, to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all.

Celebrate with a Parade

Go to a Memorial Day parade or ceremony.

• Watch and listen to the National Memorial Day Concert 

Educate with History

Graduation Rehearsals

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians of the Class of 2023, 

Graduation is rapidly approaching and we are making final preparations for this memorable event, which is set for Thursday, June 1st at 6:30 pm.  As we previously stated (letter dated May 12th), we are planning to host graduation on our baseball field.   If weather impacts an evening ceremony, then we will have two rain dates: 

1. If inclement weather is forecasted for Thursday, June 1st we will move up graduation to Wednesday, May 31st. 

2. If Wednesday or Thursday are both impacted by weather, we will move graduation back one day to Friday, June 2nd.  

As stated previously, each graduate will be given four tickets. The tickets will give you access to the seating on the field.  If you have more than four guests, they will be able to stand/sit along the fence (see graphic below), and they can bring their own seat if they prefer.  We will provide the tickets at the mandatory graduation rehearsals on Tuesday, May 30th at 8:30 am.  Please see the sketches below that layout graduation guidelines and click here for the parking plan. Students are NOT allowed to decorate their caps for graduation. 

  

As we look ahead to next week’s graduation ceremony, we are constantly monitoring the forecast.   Currently the forecast for Thursday, June 1st graduation is 32% chance of rain, therefore we will continue to monitor the forecast closely. New England weather is always difficult to predict and we want to prepare accordingly.  

Original Date: Thursday, June 1st @ 6:30

1st Rain Date: Wednesday, May 31st @ 6:30

2ne Rain Date: Friday, June 2nd @ 6:30

• We will make the call on Tuesday, May 30th.  

In terms of a layout for graduation see the sketches below that layout graduation guidelines and click here for the parking plan. Students are NOT allowed to decorate their caps for graduation. To help prepare for graduation, we wanted to provide families with as much information regarding logistics as possible.  Handicap and elderly seating will be available (limited quantity) on the field facing the graduates (please click here to complete the elderly/handicap seating accommodations request).  We will be providing transportation from the parking lot to the seating area on the field. Parents will be facing the graduates (overlooking the farm) on the field, and graduates will be facing home plate.  Graduates will walk in between the family section (20 ft of separation) to their seats.  

Graduation rehearsal is mandatory. If you do not participate in the graduation rehearsal you will not be able to walk at graduation.  Four (4) graduation tickets, cap and gowns, and yearbooks will be distributed on Tuesday, May 30th. On the day of graduation (Thursday, June 1st) students will be reporting to the high school at 5:00 pm to conduct a mini rehearsal on graduation day.  

Parking is limited on the south side of the campus and cannot accommodate all guests, so we are encouraging graduates and families to use the same vehicle to come to the ceremony.  There will be handicap parking along the tree line at Gilbert Hall and the student parking lot has approximately 90 spaces (combined).   Additional parking will be at the hayfield.

Awards Night: On Thursday, we held our 30th annual BCAHS Awards Night Celebration.  We would like to congratulate all the award recipients.  We appreciate your dedication to excellence.  

FFA Banquet

Bristol Aggie Education Foundation: On Tuesday, the Bristol Aggie Education Foundation scholarships were awarded at assembly. The foundation awarded close to $25,000 in student grants for various business and educational opportunities and approximately $9000 in grants for student clubs! CONGRATULATIONS to all our scholarship recipients!!

The majority of this money is raised through the Farm to Table Foundation Dinner held annually in September.

Floriculture:

Our Flori Junior delivered and set up Diman’s Regional Outstands Vocational Awards Banquet at White’s of Westport. Students created 40 arrangements for this event. 

 

Floriculture Freshman: 

Flori’s freshman harvested red kale, a variety of lettuce and radish’s that they grew from seed. Students were taught how to properly clean and prepare their harvest along with the nutritional value and health benefits. Students celebrated their harvest with the sophomore class with a harvest party featuring make your own salads.

UPCOMING MCAS TESTING - FRESHMEN 2026

• Softball: On Wednesday, the seniors were celebrated by their teammates in a win over Westport.  

• LAX: LAX hosted their last game of the season on Tuesday.  We would like to thank all of our LAX athletes for a hard fought season.
