Aggie Weekly 5/26

Aggie Weekly
Good Afternoon Students, Parents, and Community Members:
This week our seniors had their final assembly and decorated the gym as a send off.  We enjoyed Spirit Week, even though the weather may have not worked in our favor.  Our students were fun of excitement as they were involved in several activities offered during the Field Day celebrations.  We would like to thank Mrs. Savage for her work to set up and thanks to our PTO for volunteering at the event(s).
This weekend is a long weekend, and while we take this time to BBQ and it’s the unofficial start to summer,  please reflect on what Memorial Day truly represents.  Even though our wars are primarily fought overseas and they are distant, we have brave men and women who consistently answer the call to duty.  This weekend is not only a time for BBQ’s, but a time for us to remember the servicemen and women in our community who paid the ultimate sacrifice:giving their lives to preserve our freedom.  Happy Memorial Day!

ABC6 News-Best of the Class: On Tuesday, ABC6 News invited Valedictorians from Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island to Roger Williams University for a breakfast and photo shoot that will be aired on ABC6 News in June.  Students, parents, and principals of students attended the event in support of their accomplishments.  Congratulations to Bristol Aggie’s Valedictorian Ally Bettencourt.  We look forward to hearing about all of her accomplishments in the future!

In the Classroom:
  • Flori:
  • The Floriculture Department has had a pretty busy few weeks. The week started off with Michelle Viau, a member of our advisory board, who came in and demonstrated new techniques with cascading bouquets and worked with students on corsages and boutonnieres for the prom.
  • The floriculture students also had the opportunity of working on a 43 arrangement party for Diman Regional High School. Diman hired the students to make white hydrangea and orange rose arrangements for their vocational awards night. Freshman and sophomore students put the finishing touches on the arrangements and helped load the van.
  • The junior floriculture department also had the opportunity to design the prom centerpieces that were created by one of flori seniors Maia Almeida.
The Junior and Senior classes also had the opportunity to create their own prom flowers for the prom.

Every year Bristol Aggie hosts an advisory night.  The junior flori students designed the centerpieces that were created by Selena Carvalho

Guidance:
As the school year is coming to an end, parents, students, and teachers can find themselves feeling stressed for a variety of reasons. While stress is an unavoidable part of life, it is important to remember that you and your health are important. Here are some suggestions on ways you can reduce stress in your life.

Peer Mentor Group: The Peer Mentor group ended the 2016-2017 school year with an end of year breakfast.  Each student was given a certificate of participation and was praised for their commitment and effort by the peer mentor advisors, Mrs. Boudreau and Mrs. Scanlon.  Thank you all for a wonderful year!

Spring Advisory: Twice a year our Vo-Ags meet with their advisory boards for the purpose of developing and improving vocational technical education programs.  This is integral for our programs to ensure that we are preparing our students for industry standards.  Thank you to our community partners who dedicate their time to our students and staff to ensure Bristol Aggie produces industry ready students.

Cory’s Cause: On Thursday, Cory and his parents came to Bristol Aggie to speak about his journey through addiction.  Our students were a great audience and they asked some excellent questions.  We would like to THANK our PTO and Booster’s for donating to Cory’s Cause to get the presentation in order.  Thank you
  • Animal Science:
On Thursday May 25th, Ms. Gagne had the pleasure of accompanying her senior Large Animal Stable Management students on a tour of the Hallamore Clydesdale farm in Lakeville, MA.  While there, the farm manager, Ned, introduced the students to the 16 "Gentle Giants." The students learned of the origin of the Clydesdale breed, as well as how much they eat, how often they are worked, and how and why they are shod-- they have special shoeing needs due to pulling the wagon on pavement for parades.

Students were able to ask any questions they had, and Ned was a wealth of knowledge when it came to these horses. They discussed training the horses to pull a wagon in a team, general care of the horses, and what they like for treats-- which happens to be carrots...at ten pounds a day, per horse, during about 9 months of the year!

Some of the other highlights of the tour were having the opportunity to check out the 115 year old wagon that these horses pull in parades, and the harnesses they wear to do so. Ned explained these harnesses are all hand stitched, made of the very finest leather, and cost around $10,000. each (times 8 horses on a team!). We also toured the shoeing barn, and of course, had the opportunity to pose with "Windsor."

  • Softball:
    • Bristol Aggie 9 - Sacred Heart 0: A rain soaked four and a half innings was all the Lady Chieftains needed to defeat the visiting Saints of Sacred Heart. Malarie Pittsley kept her composure on the mound despite the weather to throw a one-hit shut out while going 3-3 offensively with two doubles and 3 RBIs. Kasey Culhane and Sarah Ellis were also perfect at the plate. Bristol Aggie will host South Shore Regional tomorrow.
    • Bristol Aggie 16- South Shore Regional 0 (5 innings): Sophomore Kennedy Alves pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts in 5 innings as the Lady Chieftains posted their fifteenth win of the season.  The Aggies provided Alves with plenty of run support. Emma Duarte hit an in the park home run. Alves, Melanie Rea and Malarie Pittsley all had doubles for the Maroon and Gold.  Bristol Aggie travels to Westport tomorrow.
