February is Black History Month

Below is information  The United States Census Bureau’s Newsroom Facts for Features about  National African American (Black) History Month: February 2021

“To commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week (then called “Negro History Week”) nearly a century ago. The event was first celebrated during the second week of February 1926, selected because it coincides with the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and abolitionist/writer Frederick Douglass (February 14). That week would continue to be set aside for the event until 1976 when, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, it was expanded to a month. Since then, U.S. presidents have proclaimed February as National African American History Month.

The following facts are made possible by the invaluable responses to the U.S. Census Bureau’s surveys. Note: References to the Black population in this publication are to single-race Black people (“Black alone”) unless otherwise noted.”

Each year, the month of February is recognized as a time to honor the successes and sacrifices of African Americans.

People all across the country come together to celebrate Black History Month, including the African American leaders and political pioneers who have influenced and helped shape our country for the better. Join Massachusetts as we remember and honor the trailblazing men and women who have sacrificed to enhance the lives of future generations.

This Map Details More Than 200 Massachusetts Sites Connected to African-American History

An accompanying online portal highlights specific sites from the 17th through 21st centuries, while a PDF map offers an alternative overview of selected locales by breaking down the list into an array of categories: monuments or works of art, businesses and organizations, streets and plazas, religious buildings, homes, public buildings, museums, schools, and burial grounds.”
